It’s a sound unique in both the Snoop canon and in the genre today. Largely produced by Major Lazer, with additional tracks helmed by Akon, Terrace Martin and others, the album’s not just a bunch of reggae-tinged singing over rap beats or rap flows over island riddims. Snoop has as much of an enthusiasm for reggae as he has a reverence for its hallmarks, and his execution is excellent. Instead, Snoop maintains his infectious charisma and unique voice as a writer while venturing into a new sound to create something wholly fresh and enjoyable. He could have easily catered to the frat boy contingent and made Legend-lite or just mimicked the genre’s most overt modern trends and clichés. The reason Snoop Lion’s Reincarnated works is because Snoop is genuinely enough of a reggae fan to understand the difference between a good reggae song and a bad reggae-tinged cash-in. Yet, despite how contrived every aspect of the story may seem, Reincarnated is easily Snoop’s most refreshing album since 2006’s Tha Blue Carpet Treatment. Then add him alluding to how he wanted to make a “positive” album but felt he couldn’t in the rap world and Reincarnated has all the makings of a career shark-jumping moment. Yes, the very idea of Snoop Dogg making a reggae album seems gimmick-y enough, but when you factor in his sticking to the script of changing his name to “Snoop Lion” and claiming he is the reincarnation of Bob Marley (who actually died a few years after Snoop was born) things start to seem hopeless. I have some great news everybody: we were all very, very wrong. Even with Snoop’s track record of working with Willie Nelson and making the world’s only tolerable rap-country collaboration, there’s no way a Snoop Dogg full-length reggae album should be any good.
In a world where we’ve seen disastrous Garth Brooks rock albums and Pat Boone metal albums, the idea of the Doggfather proving successful in a genre that rappers have struggled with for years seemed far-fetched.
As the months went on and more details emerged, including the filming of a documentary of Snoop going on a pilgrimage to Jamaica, the reality of a Snoop Dogg reggae album soon seemed inevitable. Originally announced last year, at first the prospect of the album seemed like more eccentric marijuana-induced precocious Snoop-babble.
